About Robyn Kemp, Social Care Consultant
With over 30 years’ post qualifying experience in social work, residential childcare and social pedagogy, I support organisations, leaders, managers, practitioners, carers and students to develop more relational, empowering and humane ways of working that put those we work with at the heart of learning and practice development.
I have been called a “pracademic” as I couple academia with practice. As a UK-qualified social worker (DipSW, 1995) and social pedagogue (MA, 2011), I use social pedagogy as an ethical, theory based practical framework for navigating complexity and co-creating meaningful change.
I have always struggled with the social work role of being an agent of social control – this is not why I (and most social workers I’ve met) entered the field, and yet I have seen this approach grow over my career, alongside a transactional and adversarial approach to social care relationships. When I came across social pedagogy in the early 2000s I knew this was where I would focus my energies for the remainder of my life. Social pedagogy has supported me to be a much better professional, to create and sustain supportive relationships professionally, personally and privately, and I firmly believe social pedagogy has the potential to support the UK to shift the systemic dial toward a much more supportive, and therefore a more economically stronger society.
My work spans practice, leadership, training, consultancy and education. Since the 1990s, I have established and managed children’s homes, contributed to the strategic development of children’s services in the statutory and third sectors, designed and delivered educative learning opportunities on a wide range of topics, published articles and other written work on social pedagogy and children’s care, work as an academic lecturer and tutor, and worked with organisations across the statutory, voluntary and independent sectors to co-create better support for children, young people and families and those who work alongside them. I enjoy speaking at conferences and other events and meeting people from across the world who share a deep concern to better support all people but especially marginalised and socially excluded people.
I take a critically reflective relational approach, tailoring all my work to the organisational or individual needs and wishes within a coherent, ethical framework for practice.
